Enjoy your stay at Fantasticland! The banner read dry and full of false enthusiasm. Pete had never been much into amusement parks even before. The ever present threat of clowns was there, but also he just wasn't much of a thrill seeker. He was content to live a boring life filing tax returns in his cubicle. Paperwork never got boring. Well, it was boring, but somehow Pete had always been able to find joy in the small things.
He was a glass half full kind of guy and his glass was always half full. It was raining. A soft mist rolled over the wet grass blanketing the whole area in a cemetary feeling. It was the kind of day to stay in doors with the windows locked, but unfortunately he had to check the perimiter. This place was actually pretty secure all things considered, but it was massive. Well, massive for one person to maintain and protect.
He had only been here three days, but within that time he had found plenty of food and water and supplies. You would be surprised what you can find at an amusement park. Pete sighed and picked up his axe. Pushing open the door to the gift shop he stepped out into the dread soaked mid morning. "Well, better get started." He said to himself. It was a comfort just to hear a friendly voice. Even if it was his own. Even if it trembled with a slight fear. He didn't like going out into fog like this.
You could never see what was coming up on you until the last minute. Walking slowly he realized he had fell asleep in the Alien world part of the park. There was four main sections. The Alien world, The fairy princess section, The water park section, and Halloween town which was spooky all year round for those horror junkies. Isn't life enough horror already? Pete had spent three nights here and each night he had slept in a different part of the park making his way through it slowly combing for supplies. What he found was that he had so many supplies it made more sense to stay and use them than to try and haul them all out somehow.
As far as he knew he was alone here. Pete hadn't seen anyone since he had been here, but that didn't mean there wasn't someone sleeping in the park. The most amazing thing was it was free of the dead. No one rushed off to Fantasticland when the outbreak hit. Everyone was thinking of safety not fun. Not to say that there were no dead ones here. They just weren't in great numbers.
Pete reached in his packet and got a flashlight he had found in the park. Turning it on, it's soft beam illuminated little. He walked through seeing aliens hanging from lamp posts and poking their heads out of shops. Each one a looming horror barely visible in the fog. This was a really dumb idea. He thought after about the third time getting jump scared by what turned out to be an alien prop.
His heart raced with a mix of fear and adrenaline. He heard noises in the fog. He whirled around but he really couldn't see where he was going. Eventually he wandered out into a wide open space. Then he had trouble finding which direction to even go in. He really dreaded checking Halloween town. The rain picked up and he put the hood of his sweatshirt over his head. It concealed his face a little and kept his burned half dry. It was second nature to him at this point.
The fog did break a little. Becoming thinner at points to where it was managable. Maybe the rain helped with that. He'd rather be wet than in a panick though. Panick got you killed. Off to his left he heard glass break. It sounded like it came from Area 51. It was a walk through zoo like attraction where you could see fake aliens being operated on and tested, animatronic puppeteered props and a heck of an interesting time if you're into that sort of thing. The park had no power. Pete hadn't figured how to get that back on yet.
Though, he could at least count on the fact that if there was movement in there.... It wasn't an animatronic. He gulped audiblely even in the pouring rain. Pulling the strings on his hoody a little tighter he jogged over to the doors and plunged himself into the unknown that laid behind them.

And the perverted fear of violence Chokes the smile on every face And common sense is ringing out the bell This ain't no technological breakdown Oh no, this is the road to hell... -- The Road To Hell, Pt. 2 - Chris Rea Why won't they leave me alone? Kate thought to herself as she ran down the highway, having been chased by a couple guys whose looks on their faces suggested they wanted to do some very bad things to her if they had gotten their hands on her back there in town. Thankfully, they hadn't but she'd been running on near-starvation like fumes going on two days now and every part of her body wanted to just give up, to quit. She knew she couldn't, though, not in a world of walkers and bad men at every corner... And speaking of every corner, that had been Kat Hodges' life before the world turned to hell in a pocketbook. Outcalls and escort work, pandering to the flesh fantasies of whoever would pay her. Granted, the work was rewarding...in a certain sense of the word, but it had paid her bills and kept her happy, contended and well-laid in more ways than one. Still, she often wandered what it would've been like to settle down with someone, get out of the business but once you were in, as a former madam had told her, you were in. Now, she just wanted to survive, find somewhere that was still standing...even if it meant running for things without anything to eat, running until you literally had to find a hole to collapse into. Such was her current life. Gone were the days of class and society; now it was just dog-eat-dog and fend-for-yourself out there in the world and you had to either be quick on your feet or quick with a blade or gun to survive... especially if you run into pricks like the ones back in town, Kate whispered, shuddering as she thought of their leery words to her, their snide glances, their evil looks. Running into them almost being a ending nightmare for her, but a swift kick to the nuts and a run for your life had saved Kate once again, though now she cursed herself. She'd left her backpack full of supplies and food back with them. You dumbass! she whispered, ready to just turn her little ass around and give up. As she sucked in as much breath as she could get, Kate looked around and caught sight of some direction signs. "Fantasticland?" she mused, laughing out loud at the ridiculousness of it. In this world, fantastic? The fuck?Still, she mused, it beat starving or worse. So she gathered up enough courage and whatever strength she had left and began walking down the road, following the signs and hoping no one else was around. Maybe I can take a shower, find a change of clothes...a clown outfit, perhaps? she thought, seeing the place approaching with each and every step. "You ain't got this far, Kate, to give up, she whispered. "Keep moving," reaching the front gates and thinking, "What, no one's home? Well...," she thought, shaking the chains on the doors entering the park in a desperate, forlorn hope at survival...

Pete walked inside the building to the area 51 exhibit. It was dark and kind of musty. The air was stale and it had a thickness to it that made him feel a little closterphobic. "Don't be a wuss Pete." He scolded himself. He had to find out what that noise was. It meant securing the area. He didn't have to look long before he saw a jar of fake alien guts on the floor. A rat on the table wiggled his nose at him. He was obviously the culprit.
"About gave me a heart attack guy!" Pete complained at his furry new friend. Clicking off the flashlight he walked back outside. The rain had stopped and that was good. What was even better was the fog had lifted. He didn't have that spooky feeling anymore. At least he didn't.
Until he saw the woman standing at the front gate. As soon as you enter the front gate there is a ticket booth and a kiosk that has maps for the park. If she was going to stay awhile or if she was just looking for supplies she'll pick up a park map. Pete was almost sure of that. Hell, he had one of those maps folded up in his back pocket right now.
"What are you doing girl?" He whispered to himself as he watched. He was still hovering in the door way behind the mostly closed door to area 51. He didn't want to be seen by her yet. He wanted to know if she was trouble first. He couldn't get a good look at her from here. He could only tell that she was a woman. He couldn't even tell if she was armed.
Pete wasn't bounding out to say hello. Pete were crazy now days. Might be better to just watch her for a little bit. Follow her around the park in secret and see what she gets into. If he got a bad feeling from her he could always split.

After shaking the chained gates several times, Kate stopped and turned around, sliding down until she was sitting on the ground, the gates up next to her. She took her ball cap off and set it down next to her and just began sobbing for all the world, feeling as though she had been truly been abandoned. "If I had a with me gun right now, I'd eat a bullet and be done with it", she bitterly whispered, not caring if anyone heard her or not. At that point, a feast of walkers could've bitten into her and she wouldn't've given two shits about it.
But Kate Hodges, though slight of build, wasn't a coward. No one still living was and she still had a spark of life in her; she proved as much by banging her fists into the gate. It was like a desperate cry for help.
After a lot of crying, a lot of sniffling, and a couple coughs, Kate shook her head and got up. Looking around, she didn't see anything untoward - no walkers, no bad guys, no pricks. Maybe I can find a place to hide if I can only find a way inside.
Feeling around her cut-off shorts, she pulled out what looked like a set of picks; they were lockpicks and Kate had at least one good skill - she was good at picking locks. Thankfully, whoever had tried to chain the gate shut, she mused, used a piss-poor lock, opening it after a few choice words and a skint knuckle or two. Tossing the chain aside, Kate opened the gate and stepped inside, looking to see if there was a guide or something to help her navigate the place,
Seeing a guide, weathered and worn, she picked it up and shook it a few times to knock any dust or dirt or cobwebs from it. Now, where am I? she wondered, turning the map this way and that way before figuring out some semblance of direction. Folding the map and sliding it into a back jeans pocket, she walked in, unaware there were another pair of eyes watching her....

Pete was unsure what to do. For the longest time, about twenty minutes to Pete's estimate; the girl just sat at the fence and cried. Okay, not exactly giving me serial killer vibes. Pete thought. He watched her and realized he was holding his breath. Waiting to exhale. Letting out a long sigh he watched as she got up and picked the lock.
He raised an eyebrow at this, but it didn't cross his mind that it was nefarious. With that said and done she picked up a map and began to walk. Pete slipped out of his hiding place from the shadows. He crept along the side of the buildings. His face was still mostly covered by the big hood on his hoody. And that was good too. If someone saw him from a distance they usually thought he was dead.
It had actually gotten him out of a few close calls, where there were people who he knew were the wrong sorts of people, he would just amble about with a glazed over look in his eye. Now that might seem risky, it was a good way to catch a bullet in the head, but mostly if he wandered away from whoever was living, they didn't give him a second thought.
Pete was being stealthy, but he also careful not to limp or shuffle. He kept his gate and posture purposeful and human in appearance. He watched as she seemed to be headed towards the fairy princess part of the park. There wasn't too much scary in there, the scariest part of the fair princess section was the message that little girls should be princess. It was a message they beat you over the head with.
Pete was following her for a good while. The last hour was nothing more than her walking around and familiarizing herself with her surroundings. There was one or two close calls where she turned around and he had too duck out of sight, but overall he had remained unseen. "What could be threatening about a girl crying?" He said quietly to himself. He was trying to remind himself he wasn't an asshole for wanting to be sure, it was hard to convince himself seeing someone alone and scared and his response being to hide, but that's where they were.
Pete was watching the girl and he didn't notice the trashcan until after he plowed through it. It fell over with a loud clatter. Only a few feet from the girl. As she turned, Pete ducked into the first building he could find. It was a resturante called Princess Palace Feast. The "i" in the word princess was a magic wand. How cheesy. Pete scurried inside and ducked behind the counter as soon as he got in there. Fuck did she hear me? He wondered.
Of course she heard you idiot. He told himself. She's not deaf. He knew she would come and investigate. Or maybe she would get spooked and run out of the park. Either way Pete waited in silence. He was somewhat glad he wasn't holding his axe. That with the hoody would have made him seem like a dude with bad intentions. He had no weapons in fact. Just his wits. Meaning he was basically unarmed.
After a few moments he decided the coast was clear. When he stood up he started back towards the door. Crossing the room to reach the handle the door swung open and he was face to face with this strange intruder. He could do nothing. Say nothing. His heart was hammering a million miles an hour in his chest. His face still baked in concealing shadow in the dark resturante. "Um... Hi? I'm Pete." He offered awkwardly. She would either greet him or shoot him. It was all up to chance.

It had years since Kate had been inside an amusement park and with the apocalypse, amusement parks could still be a place to wall off the horrors of the world outside. Following the map directions, she looked around and started feeling calmer; she knew she probably looked a mess - white ballcap over her ginger hair, loose-fitting blouse partly undone (and revealing more than she thought it did), cut-off jean shorts that barely covered her rear and Chuck Taylor Converse sneakers.
Not exactly the picture of confidence in someone but it was what it was-- Pete was watching the girl and he didn't notice the trashcan until after he plowed through it. It fell over with a loud clatter. Only a few feet from the girl.
Whirling around, Kate's eyes focused on the area the noise came from. Princess Palace Feast, the sign read. An amusement park eatery, she quietly chortled. Still, she coulda' swore she had seen someone watching her - if not literally having seen someone watching her, then at least she had felt someone watching her. Like the hairs on your neck were standing up a little...or like when I'd go to see a client wearing a tight dress and heels and seeing their reaction to my appearance, she mused, shaking her head. As much as she wanted to run and leave, she decided otherwise. What could it hurt? she thought.
"Hello?" she called out. Not too loud, but loud enough to know if anyone or anything would respond. "Hello?" she called again, a face of concern now present. I knew I saw someone, I knew it, she whispered, going further inside... After a few moments he decided the coast was clear. When he stood up he started back towards the door. Crossing the room to reach the handle the door swung open and he was face to face with this strange intruder. He could do nothing. Say nothing. His heart was hammering a million miles an hour in his chest. His face still baked in concealing shadow in the dark restaurant. "Um... Hi? I'm Pete." He offered awkwardly. She would either greet him or shoot him. It was all up to chance.
If she'd had a weapon in her hand, she'd've used it against Pete. She had no weapon on her other than her wits...or her fists if need be. He was wearing a hoody so she couldn't make out his face completely. He didn't seem dangerous, so she figured what the hell, why not? "I'm Kate," she said quietly. "Anyone else here?"

Pete actually blinked a few times. Just like that it was that simple. Hi I'm Pete. Hi I'm Kate and as simple as that they knew each other. He took a cautious step backwards. Not because he was still worried or scared ,but simply because he was very close to her and he didn't want her to see all of his face. She asked him if there was anyone else. Pete only shook his head.
"No." He said quietly after a while. "No, I've been here three days and I haven't seen anyone. Well, besides you." He looked down. Kicking at some fallen debris with his foot. "I don't like own this place or anything, I been camping here, but like i didn't claim it. If you find stuff you need, take it. That's cool. If you want to stay too well it's plenty big enough for the both of us. We could like uh, I don't know keep each other safe or whatever."
It had been awhile since Pete had talked to anyone. Let alone a beautiful girl with half of her chest falling out into his lap and her cheeks peeking out to say hello from the backyard. Pete wasn't that way about women. Not now, and not before his face became well done on one side. Pete was raised by his grandma and he was raised with manners. He was raised to treat women a certain way.
"We should get something to take care of that." Pete said pointing at the most superfictial of scraps on her leg. It was red and irritated, but otherwise it was minor. "Plenty of first aid supplies in the security office. No guns though. I checked." Pete's face was still half covered in shadow. He was glad for that. If she got one good look at his mug he was worried she'd run away and he actually found it nice to have someone to talk too.

"We should get something to take care of that." Pete said pointing at the most superficial of scraps on her leg. It was red and irritated, but otherwise it was minor.
"Yeah," Kate replied, glancing down for a moment, surprised he'd picked up on it so soon. "Had to escape a bunch of bad dudes back outside a while back," pointing off towards the entrance, "and ran through a bramble of bushes along the road. Did get away from them, though," she added, looking down and trying not to cry, inwardly shuddering at what would've happened had they gotten hold of her. Pete seemed nice enough but was he? She couldn't put the thought away, instead shuffling it back in her mind for now.
"So, anyway, Pete, what did you used to do before things all went to hell outside?" Kate asked. It sounded like the corniest of questions but honestly, Kate couldn't think of any other question to ask. And part of her did kinda feel for him; after all, he could be with the people who'd tried to chase her down earlier. Or he could be hiding from them, one or the other.
Either way, it didn't matter. She was here, in this amusement park, with a man she didn't know, had never met before but who looked like, in the past world, she would've loved to have gotten to know - in more ways than one. If there was one thing the former escort/street walker/stripper/hooker/etc. had learned in her life, it was how to read people. Their glances, their appearances, their words, the way they talked and carried themselves.
It had kept her safe but now, she didn't know what to make of him. Still, she figured, it beat being outside getting chased down by a bunch of horny pricks. "Lead the way," she said. "Can't be any worse a place than a Princess restaurant," a brief smile on her face as she stood there, wondering what else was going to happen.

Pete was smiling. How the heck did that happen he wondered. He had to force himself to stop grinning. But he couldn't help it. It felt nice to be helping someone. It felt nice just to have someone to talk too. He was tired of being cold and tired and scared. He felt like he was taking back control of his life a little bit by taking a chance with her. "Me? I used to sell insurance. Damn if the boys in the insurance game only knew what was coming we could have sold a ton of insurance."
The joke was weak at best and it didn't really land. At least Pete didn't think so. He moved outside ahead of her leading the way. He knew bascially where the security office was. And if he could get the power back on at least in certain parts of the park he could have working security cameras. He thought. That would go a long way in securing the park being about to see at a glance which areas needed help.
The guys that were chasing Kate were near by. They weren't in the park. They hadn't found it yet, but they were around the park. If they had decided to just leave the park and start down the road they would run into them within the next 15 minutes or so. There was god knew how many of them and Pete was no great fighter but he would defend a ladies honor weather she was a stranger or not. It was just the right thing to do and Pete considered himself a good person.
Walking slowly he dared to look around and the park was just as quiet as it always was. What Pete nor Kate knew was that Kate's pursuers were actually getting eaten by the dead as Kate and Pete walked to the security office. Outside the park, where the fog was still heavy they had gotten turned around and one by one they were taken out by the ghouls who ate the flesh of the living. Climbing out of the fog to grab them one at a time while they foolishly looked for a girl they had no business chasing.
Kate's problems were over and she didn't even know it. Her problems were going to get worse when those men came back to live and added to the growing number of the dead around Fantasticland. It was enough to cause a serious breach in the Halloweentown part of the park. Reinforcements would have to be put up if they seriously intended to stay. Otherwise supplying up and getting out of dodge might be smart as Fantasticland had a ton of supplies, but it was a tactical nightmare to manage for only two people.
Moving into the security office Pete opened the door. He moved over to the first aid station and pulled back his hoody so he could see, allowing it to fall back on his shoulders and show his face for the first time. He had his back to Kate while he searched for what he was looking for but turned to face her without realizing he had taken his hoody off. It was an absent minded gesture on his part. He looked at her with soft, innocent good guy eyes that just screamed 'here i honestly hope this helps because you seem like a nice girl.' There was no alterior motive buried beneath he wasn't trying to rob her or get in her pants.
He just liked knowing that he helped some one. When so much of the world was trying to kill each other he was the annomoally. He was the odd man out most of the time. He smiled at her. It was a nice smile full of white sparkling teeth. Pete had made it a point to keep brushing his teeth in the apocalypse. Hygine was important because there were no doctors or dentists anymore. "Here sit down here." He directed her to a swirly swivel chair and sat her down.
Pulling back the denim of her torn jeans he applied some oinment gently and placed a few bandaids over them, satisfied with his job disinfecting them. "Good as new." He boasted with a soft chuckle. He was kneeling in front of her looking up into her face. Soft sun rays spilled into the room from the open door. The sun was starting to come out. As if the death of those assholes caused the day to become brighter and more cheerful, even though neither of them knew the rapist pricks were gone.

"Me? I used to sell insurance. Damn if the boys in the insurance game only knew what was coming we could have sold a ton of insurance."
"I can imagine," Kate replied, following him back to the security office. Yeah, it sounded weak but given the circumstances any laugh was better than none. "Couldn't've been any worse than working in the world's oldest profession," she added, figuring if he was going to tell her, even incidentally, his profession, she might as well do likewise. And in all honestly, Kate had made damn serious money selling herself. She'd had a rough childhood, bouncing from foster family to foster family after her parents died when she was young, eventually bouncing out of the system at 18. With no really good marketable skills to her name, she got a job as a stripper at a posh downtown nightclub in Portland.
From there, she began hooking as a side hustle, going out on 'dates' with men she'd pickup at bars and nightclubs. A few bad choices and she found herself working street corners, taking whatever horny individuals would drive up for this trick or that trick. Sure, it sucked, no pun intended, but it paid the bills....then the apocalypse happened.
And her she was, going back to some office in an amusement park to get a few scrapes on her cared for by some man she'd never met, who might've even driven past her beforehand, unaware and going about his suburbia life. Who knew fate would bring two very disparate souls together like this?
As for her would-be rapists outside the park? They didn't know it at the time but those pricks were getting chewed up by walkers in the distance. Poetic justice, she'd call it. Entering the office, she waited as he searched the first aid kit and came up with some antiseptic pads and a few Band-Aids. He'd dropped his hoodie as he searched through it and turned to treat her scrapes without realizing it. It was then that she saw his face for the first time...
It should;ve revolted her, seeing his scarred face but it didn't; instead, it reminded her, as he was cleaning the scrapes on her legs and treating them, that not all scars were on the inside as hers' were. Some were on the outside, but the scars weren't important; it was how you dealt with them. She didn't know how he managed to deal with them; she'd dealt with hers by selling her body. Some comparison, huh? she bitterly thought.
"Thanks," she replied, smiling at him, her first honest smile in quite some time. She wanted to kiss him all over but instead, she gave him a simple peck on the cheek - after pulling him back to his feet. "No need to become a knight in shining armor quite yet," she joked," but a tour of Fantasticland might be a start."

Pete was taken aback by the kiss on the cheek. Not only was it completely unexpected but she had done it with no reservation. He hadn't even fully realized his face was out for all to see until then. He felt a deep burn in his cheeks and it wasn't from the burn on his face. His face turned red as he stood up and stammered.
"I uh... It wasn't anything special. I just... Uh..." He cleared his throat and the next time he spoke his voice cracked. "WHY don't WE go check out the pirate section. I only did a rudimentary check of that place. I don't know why, pirates kind of wig me out." He was blushing again, for entirely different reasons.
This should be fun. Two alone in an empty park. The possibility of romance should be sky high, but he wasn't thinking about that. He was thinking about weather or not that was a pitty kiss and he decided he hated himself for thinking it at all. He was a good looking guy beneath all that. The looks were still there well halfway.
He walked with his hands stuffed down in his jeans pockets. He had forgotten his axe entirely. It laid somewhere in the park, he wasn't sure where. He didn't even care that he was walking around completely unarmed. Even though this place hadn't been secured he let his gaurd down. He felt safe here. Part of it he supposed he felt safe with her.
She had opened up to him about her job before and he wouldn't have judged her for it. Didn't in fact. But he was a little sad for her. He quietly wondered what her life must've been like. His was pretty boring. He went to work, came home and had a tv dinner and talked to his pet parrot Mr. Crackers, and by 9 o'clock he was usually in bed.
Pete led a boring life. Now he had much more excitment than he cared for, but he still didn't think of himself as a bad ass survivor. Just a survivor. Someone who was barely making it trying to grasp the struggle of the choices he'd be forced to make. Pete had never killed anyone, a few dead ones but not even many of those. He was fast. He didn't have to be leathal.
He stopped in front of a sign that said "Castaway Cove" There was a skull and cross bones flag flapping in the breeze and two pirate swords crossed at the entrance. Pete picked one up. It was a swashbuckling curved blade. "Ready?" He asked with a voice that was surprisingly steady.

I only did a rudimentary check of that place. I don't know why, pirates kind of wig me out." He was blushing again, for entirely different reasons.
"They kinda wig me out too," Kate replied, taking a few moments to try and fix up her blouse. Seeing that it was past its' day, Kate simply tore the blouse off and grabbed a nearby security top; it was large but it looked almost brand-new and had all of its' buttons on. Fastening it quickly, she caught him looking and smirked. "What, you've never seen a naked woman before?" she joked, noting him blushing like an embarrassed schoolboy. She didn't mind; besides, she needed a new shirt and saw it, not worrying whether he saw her naked from the waist-up.
As they headed out to tour the park, Kate thought about the few times she'd gone to fairs and festivals, hoping she wouldn't run into anyone she knew from work (or worse, [past clients). It should've embarrassed her to tell him about her past, even if half-obliquely but it didn't. The way she saw it, she had a nice-looking bod, she kept in relatively good shape so why shouldn't she use her assets to make money?
They stopped at one part of the park - a pirates area. "Arrgh," she said quietly, blushing a little bit as she remembered what Pete had said to her earlier....
"Yeah," she replied, picking up the other sword and holding it out in front of her, like a pirate ready to fight. "Onward, Blackbeard, arrrgh!" she laughed; for the first time in a long, long while, she was having a little bit of fun.

Pete was beginning to loosen a bit. He had a smile on his face. It was shocking because he never really opened up to anyone this fast. Most people came with judgment. Even the nice ones couldn't help looking at you funny. It was sad because no matter how nice a guy you were, a face like this people just assumed you were one of the bad guys.
Pete couldn't be the furthest thing from a bad guy. He had a mean streak that he had not yet discovered, but that was still buried deep. The world hadn't pulled it out of him yet kicking and screaming into the bloody new world. He hadn't be face with a choice that was kill or be killed. He hadn't yet gotten his hands bloody or soiled. He was still a nice guy.
He valued that. He held on to the ideals of the past and considered himself, himself. He had seen others, in a few small groups along the way who had lost themselves. Every part of who they were, was shattered pieces and life was just constant PTSD and survive. It was cold and it was ugly. Pete found himself in an amusement park with a beautiful woman who only a few moments ago had taken her top off.
He couldn't help but look even though he turned away awkwardly yelling sorry! sorry! Like he had meant to look instead of them having been tossed at him so casually. Pete was the guy who respected women, and if he ended up with one it was because he courted her and tried to win her heart. He found pleasure in the pursuit. Or at least he did.
He thought about his last girlfriend as Kate had been putting on a top. She was small and bossy. 5'2 but the bossiest thing you ever saw in your life. He could have done better honestly, but he didn't know how to break up with her. That was Pete in a nutshell. He was the guy who stayed in a relationship he was miserable in because he didn't want to hurt the other person's feelings. In essence.... Pete was a bit of a marshemellow.
Standing here now at Castaway cove he almost looked like a badass. There was a serious look on his face. His hoody flapped in the breeze along with his hair as his squinted eyes looked over the park. The scars on his face suggested he was a hard man who had done hard things to survive. The rips in his jeans and shirt, which was smeared with dirt and blood told a similiar story. Pete had the sword resting on his shoulder, one arm hoisted up as he surveyed his surroundings stoicly.
Then the moment passed as a bashful sheepish smile spread across his face. "Come on!" He cried and sped off into the park. There were rides and games, not all of which needed electricity. Pete ran off to the pirate ship. It was hulking ship in the center of this part of the park. It was actual size with authentic sails and a whole below deck to explore. They would be sleeping here tonight. Pete would fall in love with this ship and it would remain their home for the remainder of their time in the park.
Pete ran up the gang plank and onto the ships deck. He watched the hoisted sails flapping in the wind and he laughed. Looking down at Kate who had yet to join him he raised his arms and shouted "I'M THE KING OF THE WORLD!" probably very cheesy but he didn't care. He was having fun too. FUN! When was the last time anything was fun. It was excillerating.
Pete motioned for Kate to join him on the ship. "You want to be my first matey?" He asked doing his best pirate imatation voice. The reason pirates had always wigged him out was the idea of being lawless. Free. He was raised in a structured household where there was love, but there was also a lot of rules. Expectations. He ended up in the world's most boring job because, well because it was the safe reliable option. He blamed his upbringing, which he loved but resented.
"Oh wow look at this thing! It's amazing." He marveled running his hand against the aged looking wood. "Wonder if she'd really sail." He pondered. Looking up he could see Kate beside him on the ship now. "We gotta name her." He said as if it was the most logical thing in the world. Of course the ship had a name it was the "Sea Turtle" But Pete wanted to make it his. In that moment he wanted it to be his. He felt like a kid in that moment. A kid who had just stumbled upon the world's best secret.

Kate could see Pete loosening up and for the briefest, flickering moment it made her feel good, to know there was still a beating heart inside her, a heart that cared about someone other than herself. It both frightened her but also exhilarated her, gave her a reason for continuing on.
Inside, a mess of jumbled thoughts went through her own mind. For once in her life, she found herself with someone didn't see her as simply a sex object to be bought for her body but as a human being to be loved and respected. That shocked her but instead of making her want to run, it only tightened her resolve to stay with Pete. For how long, she didn't know but she knew she wasn't going to leave either. That made her feel better about the whole thing.
I should be running but I'm not, and Pete? Yeah, he's kinda cute, in a froppish pirate kind of way, she mused as she watched him, I like that.
Shaking her head in humorous disbelief, Kate chased after him towards the pirate ship, not caring if anyone saw her... Pete motioned for Kate to join him on the ship. "You want to be my first matey?"
It only took her a second to reply. "I'd be honored," she said, climbing onboard and joining him at his side. Surveying the park around them, she felt safe. For the first time in ages, she felt safe. When he asked her if they should rename the pirate ship, she didn't hesitate in her answer. "Nah, Sea Turtle's a nice name," pausing as she wrapped an arm around his waist and stood there, looking at the park before them. She felt safe, she felt comfortable, she felt like someone cared for her...and for the briefest of moments, a tear crept down from her eye, down her cheek and fell. It wasn't a tear of sadness either, but of finding a place in this topsy-turvy, screwed up world....her place. By her man's side, no matter what came.

Pete was so caught in in the wonder and fantasy. He felt like a boy living a cherished memory. There weren't many memories now days that were cherished. Everything you cherished came from before. He was surprised when she put her arm around his waist. There was only a few moments hesitation before Pete rested his head on top of hers and put his arm around her.
He was still looking off into the park. He hadn't yet noticed the giant pool to the side of the ship. Guests could "walk the plank" And dive off of it which was basically a fancy themed diving board for the pool below. This part of the park was close to the water park part of the park, where Pete had found most of his water supply. "Is it cheesey to say this is the best day of my life?" He asked not really realizing he had asked it out loud. Or caring for that matter.
He looked at Kate. He took her into his hands. One on either one of her arms, and looked her in the eyes. "What's your last name Kate? Mine's Ellis. I want you to know that. I don't know why but I want you too." He knew why. Because fairy tales didn't exist and people died. He was saddened by the thought of dying without her knowing his full name. It just didn't have poetic justice.
He was about to cry. His eyes watered up, but shimmered in the mid day light that was now shinning brightly through the quickly parting clouds. Pete was a sweet kid. A bit of a goof and a clutz, but a good guy just the same. This was kind of like a first date. He wanted to have new memories to cherish. God forbid if anything happened..... He didn't like thinking that way, but he used to be an insurance salesman. It was basically hardwired into his DNA probability and inevitablity. He know bad things happened, mostly to good people.
Kate was good people. He could sense that now, and nothing in the world was more important to him in that moment than knowing her name. Knowing more about her. He reached up a hand and cupped her cheek, caressing it in a soft way. Her skin was warm against the palm of his hand. Her hair fluttered in the breeze. It made her look unbelievably beautiful. Honest, humble, confident, brave, unashamed, and proud... These were the few emotions he had already picked up from her in just a short time. She was a strong woman. Stronger than probably even she knew. He respected that.
