You ever look at a butterfly and watch it flutter through the air, not knowing that at one time it had started out as a caterpillar - short, stubbly and ugly.
That was Kate Hodges' life until now; growing up in foster care, she never knew her parents and been bounced around from foster family to foster family, staying only long enough to barely get to know anyone before being shuttled off to another. By the time she bounced out of the system at 18, she had developed a hard shell, a thick skin of cynicism that pushed away people as much as her physical beauty drew people in. It was the worst of both worlds: people would usually only see her for her beauty and for her body, not for who she was as a person, as a living breathing person.
Pete was different, though. Even though they barely even knew other, having just met mere minutes ago, she honestly felt like she'd known him forever. She couldn't explain it, but by his side, she felt safe, she felt comfortable, felt free to be herself while knowing that he was in charge. He could her for the person she was, not the person she had been.
And, she had to admit, he was pretty cute. Part of her business before things went south had been reading people, knowing when to run and when not to. She didn't get that from him; instead, as he pulled her close, she got the feeling that if anyone dared get close to her, he'd step forth to protect her, to keep her safe. That was a feeling she had never gotten from anyone and it only made her feel better about that things... "Is it cheesey to say this is the best day of my life?" He asked not really realizing he had asked it out loud. Or caring for that matter.
"No, it isn't," Kate replied... He looked at Kate. He took her into his hands. One on either one of her arms, and looked her in the eyes. "What's your last name Kate? Mine's Ellis. I want you to know that. I don't know why but I want you too."
For a few moments she looked right at him, her eyes ablaze, not caring what happened or what direction they went in as long as Pete was by her side. "Its' Hodges," she whispered, "but I'd gladly take yours from now on," leaning up on her toes to kiss him. Not a simple peck like earlier, but an honest, desirous kiss.[/font]

The moment was magical. It was truly fair tale stuff. Stuff that Pete had never exactly believed in. The statistics alone on two people being exactly right for each other, scattered across the country; or perhaps the world, finding each other. It was staggering. But numbers had always filled Pete's head. He was cautious and timid, bashful and brave when called upon, but he was also loyal and smart, funny and awfully clumsy.
These were the sum of parts that summed up Pete's entire life until now. He was noble. Chivalry isn't dead, it's only resting. He smiled squeezing her a little tighter as their lips met and he returned the kiss with a grateful eager passion. He was living. Not surviving, but making the world okay again by investing in it.
It was a brave act to throw away your caution and trust that things would be okay. He thought they would be. The pirate ship rocked gently in the strong wind. He was smiling. He didn't think that maybe a ride shouldn't rock if it wasn't operating. The sway of the ship felt natural. It was a ship after all. Let's forget for a moment it wasn't actually in water.
The unmaintained supports were groaning. But they didn't hear that either. The ride had been closed for maintanence right before the outbreak. They had walked right past the signs that said keep out under construction because all of Pete's attention had been on those marvelous black sails. With wind flapping through the rips in the fabric. He was mystified.
A moment later the whole ship was crashing into the cement below. A good 7 foot drop. Heavy weight and a thunderous crash as the ground seemed to shake. Kate and Pete were flung off the ship. Pete colliding hard with a pirate themed hotdog cart just in front of the ride. Kate hit a kiosk with a canopy top. Kate landed safely and was pretty much okay. Pete hit his head and was slipping into unconsiouness as the dead surrounding the pakr heard the crash and started spilling into the unlocked gate like eager park vistor's on half price ticket day.

He smiled squeezing her a little tighter as their lips met and he returned the kiss with a grateful eager passion. He was living. Not surviving, but making the world okay again by investing in it.
Smiling and staring into Pete's eyes, Kate was also oblivious to the fact that they were on a pirate ship a little ways above the ground, but she didn't care. Why couldn't I have found a man like this before? she thought as their lips lingered next to each other before breaking away, though the same feelings as before were there, making her feel alive and well, like a woman.
Suddenly... Pete hit his head and was slipping into unconsciousness as the dead surrounding the pakr heard the crash and started spilling into the unlocked gate like eager park visitors on half price ticket day.
Shaking the cobwebs out of her head, Kate rushed over to where Pete was and knelt down next to him. "Come on, Pete, wake up," she said to him, her voice barely a whisper at first but slowly increasing in volume. She could see a couple walkers shambling about down towards one side of the park but she knew where one of those foul beasts were, there would inevitably be more. "Come on, Pete," shaking him back to consciousness, "we need to go, now!"

Pete didn't know where he was. He vaguely could hear talking, but it sounded so far away. His ears were ringing. There was a crechendo wailing in his head. He felt preasure and like vomitting, he rolled over to his side to do just that. His gut dry heaved, but there was nothing it it to come up. Pete's eyes began to flutter closed again.
His eye lids were so heavy, they just wanted to stay closed. He felt something shaking him. He groaned and opened his eyes a bit to see Kate. He winced in pain leaning up a little. Everything was blurry and hard to orient because it seemed like his field of vision had been filtered through a kaleidoscope. "What..." He said he couldn't think of the words... He saw a walker coming at Kate and though he didn't know why he was afraid something deep within him screamed in protest. He shot to his feet and shoved it out of the way. It toppled backwards into the wreckage of the ship.
Pete grabbed his stomach and dry heaved again. He looked up to see more of them coming. At least five. Shambling and stumbbling after a moment it clicked home what they were. His vision settled back to normal though his head was pounding. "RUN!" He shouted grabbing Kate's hand they did just that. He didn't know how long they ran for. He ran until his legs wanted to quite and his head threatened to split open and then he fell down out of breath.
They were in an entirely different part of the park now. No walkers here but this place was huge. They might be able to wander for days without running into one even with the gates open. A lot of wide open spaces to get lost in. Pete pointed to a building. "There. Let's get inside for now." He said and drug her to the first building he could reach once he got back on his feet.

Seeing Pete stumble back up on his feet, Kate chuckled. "Glad to see you're still alive," pausing long enough to run one walker's head through with her sword. "Damn, these are real!" she thought surprised. She figured they were props; they weren't. Unfortunately, several more walkers were approaching and both of them knew it was time to skedaddle out of there.

Still holding his hand in hers, Kate followed him inside and glanced around, leaning back against a wall to catch her breath. Just for the shell hell of it, she pulled Pete over to her and whispered, "You saved my life; should I reward you for it, my captain?" letting out a quiet "Arrgh!" like they were still on the now-broken to pieces pirate ship.

It should have been ridiculous. It should have been the furthest thing from his mind. They were in present and immidiate danger, but if he was going to die he wanted to have known her more intimately. When she said what she said about rewarding him. Pete pushed her back against the wall and pressed his lips to hers.
It was passionate and urgent. His hands moved up her sides in the dark building. He didn't even know where they were. What building they had ducked into and the little bit of light that had made it through the single window didn't help them solve that mystery much.
Outside were growls and the sounds of wood being shuffled over. There was a lot of walkers outside. The park was being flooded with 50 or so, but within a few hours they would spread out. Wander away and it would be up to Pete and Kate to clear this place from scratch if they planned to stay. Not to say that slipping out and running away wasn't still an option because it was but there was a lot of supplies here. It would be a shame to give them up.
Pete wasn't thinking about that. He was thinking about the here and now as he fumbled in the dark for the button on his jeans. "I think so..." He said eagerly between kisses. They were surrounded. They were probably going to die. Why not go out with a bang? No pun intended.

Returning his kiss with an equal one, she didn't worry about a few dozen walkers that had shambled and grumbled their way inside the park. She could hear them, but all her attention was focused on Pete. Was it risky, having sex with someone she'd just barely met? Yeah, sure...so too was getting gnarled on by a walker. Such were the vagaries of life these days. "I think so..." He said eagerly between kisses. They were surrounded. They were probably going to die. Why not go out with a bang? No pun intended.Pulling him tight against her, Kate helped him undo his pants, letting them drop to the floor as she undid her shorts.... (PM time, Pete Ellis?)

Fade to black....
When it was all said and done they hadn't died. They were actually quiet throughout, with brief interluding moments of deep intense eye contact. He was here with her. And she wasn't turning away from the deformity of his face, she was embracing it. Embracing him. He wanted to cry, but he forced himself not too. He was just so happy.
He hadn't found anyone since this happened that actually cared about him as a person. He was just the guy with the fucked up face or the sketchy guy who shouldn't be trusted. No matter how nice a guy Pete was or how much he tried to do good and do right by others. It was a lonely fucking existance and he was glad that it was over.
If he had too he would die to protect Kate without even thinking about it. She had come to mean that much to him in such a short amount of time that he really almost wanted to ask himself if he was crazy for feeling this way, but he wasn't crazy. He was choosing to live again and Life had always been a risky endevor. He knew that better than anyone being an insurance agent.
They were both mostly naked. Pete had managed to pull his pants back on before lying on the floor next too her again in her embrace. " Did you know people are seven times more likely to fall in a sewer grate than to be struck by something falling from the sky that would kill them?" Pete smiled nervously.
He had facts, and statistics and nervous chatter. His smile was sweet and innocent. "In fact statistically people are far more likely to suffer an accident than to die of old age, and that was before.... If we're going to do this we have to look out for each other at all times. The average life expectancy before the end of the world was 77. I want us to live longer than that. Deal?" He asked holding out his hand for a handshake in gloriously dorky fashion.

"No, I didn't know that," Kate replied, holding him close in her own embrace. Like Pete, she was mostly naked too, with most of her clothes bunched up under her head as a sorta makeshift pillow. Listening to him tell this fact and that fact, she kept her attention on him, studying every part of him - even the disfigurement of his face, though she didn't know how to broach the subject without interrupting the soliquy between them.
Her heart was still racing as she pictured their lovemaking just before - yes, part of it had been rushed; after all, they'd just escaped from a small pack of walkers and as far as either of them knew, there were still walkers out there. But it'd also been tender, surprisingly tender and Pete hadn't treated her like some slab of meat but like a living, breathing, passionate woman. If we weren't in the middle of an apocalypse I would have screamed loud enough to hear me back in Portland, she mused, snuggling up next to him even closer.

"Deal," Kate said, taking the moment to pull him over on top of her. "Now please make love to me," she whispered, kissing him quietly. "Don't rush, don't even think about the outside...just think about us? Okay?"
